Cathay Pacific passenger tries to kill himself in toilet

A 31-year-old man tried to kill himself inside the toilet of a Cathay Pacific plane by slashing his neck and tying a shoelace around it.

The man, described as South Asian, locked himself up inside the toilet as the plane, which originated in Seoul, was coming in to land in Hong Kong, Apple Daily reports.

Cabin crew used a spare key to enter the toilet after repeated attempts to get the man to open the door.

They found him with a bloodied neck from slash wounds, the report said.

He briefly put up a fight before being subdued and was taken by ambulance to North Lantau Hospital where he was later discharged.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Saturday near the end of a scheduled flight from Seoul where the man had boarded on a connecting flight to Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital.

Witnesses said he looked distressed when he asked to go to the toilet as the plane was making its descent to Hong Kong and was warned by a cabin staff.

He ignored the warning and darted off, locking himself up in the toilet and prompting the cabin crew to go after him, they said.

Investigators said the man used the back cover of his mobile phone to cut his neck and tried to strangle himself with a shoelace.

The Airport Authority said he will be flown to Nepal.
