Unmindful of his own safety, a high school teacher from Hunan province jumped into a cesspool to save a three-year-old child.
Yang Wenli, a math teacher at a secondary school in Lenshuijiang in Hunan, saw the toddler crying for help after being caught in a cesspool by a countryside road on April 16, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
As the toddler was almost totally submerged, Yang didn’t hesitate to jump into the pool and pull him up to safety. The pool is used for fertilizing crops.
After the terrified boy was brought back to the arms of his crying mother, Yang climbed out of the pool, which is said to be 1.7 meters deep, with mud and feces covering his entire body.
The mother said the boy fell into the pool accidentally while she was busy picking up bamboo shoots.
Yang did not bother to mention his deed to colleagues and students at school, but his heroism was soon revealed after media people came to interview him.
He said he just did what any normal person would do in such a situation.
The school has urged the local government for present an award to Yang for his bravery and selflessness in helping others.
