A woman who withdrew a large sum of money from the Hang Seng Bank head office in Central found her backpack unzipped and the envelope containing the cash missing, Headline Daily reported Tuesday.
At around 1 p.m. Monday, the 49-year-old woman, surnamed Chow, made a withdrawal of HK$230,000 in cash and put it inside her backpack.
While Chow was walking toward Admiralty, she noticed that her backpack felt different.
She stopped and found it open with the money gone.
Chow immediately called police.
A preliminary police investigation suggested that the thief had been eyeing the victim when she made the withdrawal at the bank.
Police are now examining closed-circuit television footage from the bank and neighboring buildings for clues.
A similar theft occurred just a month earlier, on April 15.
A woman who had taken HK$150,000 cash from the Hang Seng Bank head office and put it in her backpack found her bag wide open and the money gone when she arrived at the MTR Central Station.
Police are not ruling out the possibility that the two cases are linked.
Citizens are reminded to be careful and watch out for any suspicious people around them during or after a visit to the bank.
