Video of boy defecating outside mall splits netizens

Ever heard of Xi Jinping’s “toilet revolution”?

This woman probably hasn’t or her boy would never have been caught with his pants down — literally.

The woman, described in social media posts as a mainlander, is splitting public opinion after a video of the child defecating in the street outside a Tsim Sha Tsui mall went viral.

The clip shows her holding down the child’s pants as he poops on a marble walk.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. on Monday outside the Sun Arcade in Canton Road.

Netizens denounced the “unhygienic act” and blamed it on the “low standards of mainland tourists”.

They said the boy might have been too young to comprehend the act but the woman was responsible for him.

The two could have gone inside the arcade or any of the surrounding establishments which are likely to have toilets, they said.

Other commenters criticized the video-taker’s motives, saying the person targeted the two to “stir up trouble for mainland tourists”.

The person might have filmed them without their knowledge, they said.

Another netizen said the woman ignored the video taker when she was called out, adding the latter had filed a report with the building security before filming the incident.

So much for China’s efforts to promote toilet manners.

Then again, local governments ordered by Xi to trial the program might be having a hard time reaching their constituents.

Reports say provincial task forces are only now beginning to get people to clean up their act.
