A cannon measuring about 1.5 feet long was found in Sheung Shui in the early hours of Thursday, prompting some passersby to fear that it could contain explosive material.
A cleaning lady found the object at around 1 am outside a supermarket, according to Apple Daily.
Following an alert, the police arrived and took away the object.
After examining it, the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau said the device did not contain any explosive and that it did not pose any hazard.
Investigations are on as to how the device was left on the street and by whom.
Apple Daily cited a military expert as saying that someone might have bought the small cannon in mainland China and transported it to Hong Kong in order to use it as a decorative item.
Devices like these are available for as little as 200 yuan on some mainland websites, he said.
The report cited a lawyer as saying that it is legal to own used or empty cannon and use it for private decoration or display.
According to hk01.com, the cannon was found on Chi Cheong Road in Sheung Shui, right opposite a Wellcome Supermarket store.
