Rusty can opener gives iced milk tea a bad taste

The iced milk tea a man bought for his breakfast from a Hoixe cake shop tasted odd.

When he opened the lid of the paper cup, he found out why.

There was a rusty can opener in the drink and a layer of oil on the tea’s surface, Apple Daily reported Thursday.

The customer, surnamed Chan, paid HK$19.50 for some bread and the iced beverage at around 8 a.m. Wednesday at the chain’s outlet on Johnston Road in Wan Chai.

Chan called the cake shop to file a complaint.

A staff member merely told him to return the can opener to the shop.

Chan later called the chain’s headquarters.

The firm told him Wednesday afternoon it would give him a half-pound cake as compensation.

Chan said he hoped the cake shop would improve its procedures to ensure food safety.

Hoixe was not available for comment when contacted by reporters from the newspaper.
