Woman, 62, arrested for attacking store owner after foiled theft

A 62-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday for attacking a fashion store owner in Wan Chai after she was caught red-handed trying to steal a handbag.

The woman, surnamed Chu, who has no previous criminal record, attacked the store owner with a hammer in a fit of rage after she was confronted about the attempted theft, Sing Tao Daily reports.

Entering the store, which was located on Queen’s Road East, at about 4 pm, Chu is said to have picked up a handbag costing more than HK$1,000.

She then asked the shop owner – who was also a woman — if the bag was made of genuine leather.

The owner replied in the affirmative, following which Chu suddenly made a dash toward the door with the handbag in hand.

However, she was grabbed by the owner, leading to an intense physical altercation between the two.

During the course of the fight, Chu, who seemed to have come prepared, pulled out a pork chop tenderizer hammer and attacked the 54-year-old owner on the head.

A passerby witnessed the incident and alerted the police, who quickly arrived at the scene.

Chu was arrested while the lady shop owner was sent to hospital for treatment of minor head injury.

Officers also found a cutter knife on Chu, who has been detained under charges of robbery, assault and possession of an offensive weapon.
