Tesla-riding elderly couple hurt after accelerator confusion

An elderly couple sustained minor injury after the husband mistakenly stepped on the accelerator while parking his Tesla.

The 68-year-old man was shaken but unscathed while his wife had bruises on her left hand, Apple Daily reports.

Police said the man, who runs an electronic components company, confused the accelerator with the brakes as he maneuvered into a car park in Hung To Road in Kwun Tong.

The Tesla Model S smashed into a wall, according to investigators.

The driver quickly backed up and hit a concrete pillar.

Police and fire services personnel helped the couple out of the vehicle and brought them to hospital where they were later discharged.

The car, bought new last year for HK$860,000 (US$110,819), was heavily damaged. Its right rear tire almost came off.

With a dual electric motor, this version of Tesla Model S packs 85 KWh of power and takes just 5.6 seconds to hit 100 kilometers per hour.

It has a maximum speed of 225 kph and goes 460 kilometers on a single charge.
