What should have been a joyful celebration at Ocean Park turned into mourning after a newborn dolphin lived for only a few minutes.
The baby dolphin was born to a 15-year-old bottlenose dolphin on Wednesday, Metro Daily reports, citing a spokesman for the park.
It looked very weak when it came out of the mother’s womb. It swam for a few minutes before it stopped and died, the spokesman said.
The mother is in stable condition and is being kept under close watch at the marine mammal breeding and research center.
A post-mortem autopsy conducted by an in-house veterinarian did not show any congenital anomalies on the baby, the spokesman said.
He said tissues from the baby’s body were extracted and would be sent to an overseas laboratory for further examination to determine the cause of death.
A study in western Australia showed the survival rate of newborn bottlenose dolphins is quite low.
About one in three is not able to live longer than a year and 44 percent tend to die before they turn three years old, the research found.
The death has been reported to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
