A 51-year-old woman was killed and her male companion injured after their motorcycle crashed on a waterworks construction site in Tuen Mun.
The woman, surnamed Lui, died in Tuen Mun Hospital without regaining consciousness, Metro Daily Hong Kong reports.
The 56-year-old driver, surnamed Cheung, suffered injuries to his waist and limbs. He was brought by paramedics to Yan Chai Hospital.
The two former co-workers were on their way to a meal Sunday morning when the accident occurred in Tuen Mun Road.
Cheung swerved to the opposite lane to avoid the construction site and tried to pull back in when he saw an oncoming car.
But the mortorbike clipped a bank of traffic cones before crashing into several cars, vaulting into the air and throwing Lui and Cheung to the ground, according to investigators.
Witnesses said Lui lost consciousness from the impact of the fall and was unresponsive when paramedics arrived.
She was rushed to hospital where she was certified dead.
Josephine Mak, a passing plastic surgeon from Tuen Mun Hospital, tried to revive Lui before emergency responders took over.
She helped bring Cheung to Yan Chai Hospital, along with other motorists who suffered minor injuries.
Senior police inspector Chan Wing-fai said Cheung and Lui were former colleagues. They were headed for Sai Kung for a meal.
