An escalator accident in China’s Heilongjiang province last Friday has claimed the lives of a 37-year-old man and his two-year-old son.
The accident happened at a shopping centre in Daqing City as the man and his son were taking an escalator to the third floor of the building from the second, Apple Daily reports.
The duo fell off the escalator and came crashing on to the first level.
The boy was pronounced dead on the spot while his father was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The man succumbed later to head injuries.
CCTV monitors showed a sudden movement on the escalator after which the man and a child fell off from the moving staircase, an eyewitness said.
Pictures taken by passers-by showed the father and son wearing sandals at the time of the accident. The escalators, meanwhile, had no additional railings or protective shields.
Mainland media said it was not clear if the accident arose due to an escalator failure or if the father had stumbled and fallen.
The father was said to be holding his child in his arms at the time of the accident.
Mainland police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Following news of the deadly accident, several local authorities in China have begun inspections on escalators and conducting safety checks at shopping centers, according to chinanews.com.
