Woman loses cash to European men in ‘liquid spilling’ trick

Police are looking for two foreign men suspected of stealing HK$80,000 (US$10,314) from a woman after pouring an unknown liquid on her.

The 30-year-old victim, surnamed Lam, said the men took advantage of the confusion to swipe the money from her bag, Sky Post reports.

She had just withdrawn the cash from a bank in Castle Peak Road in Tsuen Wan.

Police described the suspects as European in their early fifties, bulky and about 1.7 meters to 1.8 meters tall.

Lam was walking in Tai Ho Road, several meters from the bank, when the men approached her and spilled liquid on her clothing, investigators said.

The suspects apologized and proceeded to help her clean up.

She said she found the money gone after the men had left.

Police said Lam might have been targeted by the suspects from the time she stepped into the bank.

They are treating the case as burglary.

Two similar thefts involving liquid spilling took place in 2013, with the victims losing a luxury handbag and HK$60,000 cash, according to Sky Post.
