Netizens react after mother stuffs child into MTR garbage bin

What would you do with an unruly child in the middle of a busy train station?

An apparently harassed mother found a way to discipline her little son, but was roundly chastised for it.

A photo making the rounds of social media shows a toddler held inside a cylindrical garbage bin with only his upper body sticking out, while a woman who looks like his mother is holding both of his arms, Headline Daily reports.

The woman who posted the photo on her Facebook page said it was taken at the MTR Hong Kong Station in Central on Sunday, adding that the woman was apparently punishing her child.

When several passersby told her to stop what she was doing, the woman answered them in Cantonese, Metro Daily reported.

Some netizens called it child abuse, while others worried that germs in the bin could make the toddler sick.

Another netizen said parents should not shame or embarrass their children in public.

Barrister Albert Luk Wai-hung said the mother could be charged with violating Offences against the Person Ordinance, which is punishable with up to three years imprisonment, even though she did not beat or injure the child.
