Police plan new campaign to curb illegal parking

Police will launch a new week-long campaign against illegal parking, with officers issuing tickets without prior warning, RTHK reports.

The campaign, which will be launched Wednesday, will also target those who pick up and drop off passengers and goods in banned areas.

Offenders will be fined without prior notice.

Ahead of the formal launch of the campaign, officers handed tickets to some motorists who had parked illegally in Wan Chai.

Some of those fined were upset that the tickets were issued without any warning, the report said.

In a previous campaign last month, officers issued 40,762 parking tickets in a week.

The government collected at least HK$13 million, assuming a HK$320 fine for each ticket, the Hong Kong Economic Journal noted, citing figures from the police.
