A couple from Shenzhen, attending the wedding banquet of their niece at JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong, was injured after being attacked with a knife by the father of the bride allegedly for not wearing proper attire at the event, Headline Daily reports.
The 73-year-old suspect, surnamed Chan, is believed to be at odds with his sister, 65, who came to Hong Kong for the wedding banquet with her husband, 64, along with a few other relatives from Shajing in Shenzhen on Monday.
Chan was infuriated after seeing his sister arriving at the five-star hotel wearing only an old T-shirt, pants and sandals, while her husband was in short pants and slippers.
At the reception at around 6 p.m., in front of the other guests, Chan engaged the couple in a fierce exchange, accusing them of being disrespectful.
Chan then took out a knife from his suit and attacked his sister, who got wounded in the head. The husband also sustained a cut to his left hand while trying to protect his wife.
The knife used by Chan was around 28 centimeters in length, Ming Pao Daily News said.
Hotel staff called the police who arrested Chan while Chan’s sister and her husband were rushed to the hospital.
