A Filipino domestic helper was sentenced to a nine-week jail term for slapping her employer’s eight-year-old daughter and also for overstaying, Metro Daily reports.
Reni Ika Aviria, 31, applied for torture claims after her contract as a domestic worker expired in 2011, according to Ming Pao Daily.
She was later invited by a compatriot, who is the stepfather of the girl, to work for his family in Shek Kip Mei in Kowloon.
In late 2014, the girl’s mother had a fight with her husband and decided to move out of the house. Before leaving, she asked Aviria to take care of her daughter.
In January 2015, Aviria slapped the girl’s face three times, the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court heard.
She also rubbed freshly cut chili peppers on the girl’s face.
The girl tried to call her mother to report what Aviria did to her, but the maid grabbed the mobile phone and cut the line.
The girl told her mother about the incident two days later. She was sent to a hospital for a medical examination, but no sign of physical or mental injury was found.
During the court hearing, Aviria said she did not intend to hurt the girl but only slapped her mildly after the girl refused to take a shower and talked back to her.
She told the magistrate that she regrets having hit the girl.
The magistrate said Aviria was cruel to the girl, who could not protect herself.
Aviria was given a five-week jail term for child abuse and another four weeks for overstaying.
