Tokyo police probe underwater attacks on women in indoor pool

Japanese police are investigating a series of bizarre attacks that took place against female swimmers at an indoor pool in Tokyo over the weekend.

According to Asahi Shimbun newspaper, an unknown assailant slashed nine women underwater at a pool of the Tokyo Summerland water park on Sunday.

The victims, whose ages ranged from 18 to 24, all suffered gashes on their buttocks, lower abdomen or back, the paper said.

Police were quoted as saying that they received a report early afternoon that “people had their bottoms cut and are bleeding” in a swimming pool at water park in Akiruno in western Tokyo.

The Cobalt Beach indoor pool is popular for its artificial waves that roll over the surface every hour for three minutes.

Two women who were enjoying the 1 pm waves felt pain in their buttocks and noticed their wounds when they were getting out of the pool.

Six others reported similar injuries after frolicking in the 2 pm waves.

The police later found in the evening that a ninth victim, a 23-year-old woman, had been slashed on the back in the same pool.

The victims were taken to hospitals where they received stitches for their wounds.

The Cobalt Beach pool was said to have been very crowded at the time of the attacks.

Some people said they witnessed a suspicious man around the scene of the attacks. Police are examining surveillance footage to try to identify the perpetrator.
