A man who claims to be an “incarnated Buddha” while modeling for fashion magazines is a fake, mainland news website China Tibet Online said in an article published on Sunday, after verification with the Buddhist Association of China (BAC).
Gerger Rinpoche, 29, has been touted as the “most handsome incarnated Buddha” in several mainland media articles.
But the BAC said its database of “incarnated Buddhas” does not have any information on Rinpoche, hk01.com reports, citing the China Tibet Online article.
The BAC said its database encompasses Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Gansu, Qinghai and other areas like Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Liaoning.
A search on incarnated Buddhas on Sina Bloggers has returned 4,664 records, while the official BAC online database showed that there are currently 1,307 incarnated Buddhas in the mainland.
China Tibet Online reported earlier that an “incarnated Buddha” named Gerger Rinpoche had approached a commercial company and offered to host a corporate training course for 300,000 yuan (US$45,170).
Rinpoche, who has been featured in several photo shoots for fashion magazines, was quoted as saying that Buddhism can go with the times and appearing in fashion magazines could be a way to spread the religion to more people.
Rinpoche has published his own music CD and is said to be a fan of canto pop singers Jacky Cheung and Andy Lau.
