Green group urges fewer plastic umbrella bags in malls

An environmental group is urging shopping malls to reduce the distribution of plastic umbrella bags to customers.

The bags are used to prevent dripping umbrellas on rainy days.

Greeners Action polled about 800 people in various shopping centers around Hong Kong and found that half of them threw away the bags after using them once.

Some of those surveyed were found to have used two or three bags when they shopped.

The group also found that as many as 100 umbrella bags are handed out every hour during wet weather.

It said most malls do not offer sustainable ways for shoppers to recycle or reduce the use of umbrella bags.
