A Filipino domestic helper is under arrest on suspicion of aborting her baby in a toilet.
The 33-year-old woman, identified only as Mae, used a grocery store toilet in Fu Shin Street in Tai Po to induce a miscarriage on Sunday morning, news website hk01.com reports, citing investigators.
She had been taking abortion pills.
Store staff found Mae and the dead infant after hearing screams from inside the toilet.
She was brought to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. Her condition is not known.
Police said the baby was about 19 weeks old, halfway through a full-term pregnancy.
They found abortion drugs in the woman’s handbag, according to Headline Daily.
Abortion is legal in Hong Kong but under medical supervision.
The procedure must be performed by a doctor.
Police have contacted the woman’s employer and investigations are continuing.
