Mainland couple detained for blocking plane after missing flight

A mainland couple were arrested after they dashed to the airport apron at the Beijing Capital International Airport in a bid to stop an Air China plane leaving for Shanghai without them.

The incident caused a 20-minute delay to flight CA1519, which was originally scheduled to depart at 9:30 a.m. last Wednesday, China Daily reports.

Airport police arrested the couple, who were later punished with five days of administrative custody.

Pictures shared on the internet show a mainland woman with luggage standing underneath an aircraft.

The couple had earlier tried to reason with the airline’s ground staff, noting that they had been waiting at the boarding gate all along but did not hear any announcement telling passengers to board the flight.

The woman demanded that she and her husband be allowed to board the aircraft even if the boarding bridge had already been detached from the aircraft.

Sources from the airport authority later confirmed that the couple failed to catch the flight due to personal reasons.

It was not clear how the couple managed to climb down to the apron with their luggage.

Under existing regulations, unauthorized entry into restricted areas of public transportation facilities is punishable with a fine of 200 to 500 yuan (US$30-75) and administrative custody of five to 10 days for serious offenses.
