US values Hong Kong’s autonomy, says new envoy

Washington’s new top diplomat in Hong Kong says the United States values the high degree of autonomy it enjoys under “one country, two systems” and wants it maintained.

Consul General Kurt Tong also said he is eager to talk to legislators from different political backgrounds on ways to strengthen co-operation between the US and Hong Kong, RTHK reports.

He said the US recognizes Hong Kong as part of China when asked if he would support Hong Kong independence if the issue was raised by some lawmakers.

“We also very much value the high degree of autonomy that Hong Kong enjoys under the ‘one country, two systems’ construct. We believe that is a very successful formula that must be maintained going forward,” he said.

Tong said he is trying to arrange meetings with all 70 Hong Kong lawmakers as soon as they are sworn in next month.

Tong, a fluent Mandarin speaker, told RTHK’s Candice Wong that he is learning to speak Cantonese and wants to engage the public on social media, a skill his predecessor, Clifford Hart, excelled at.
