Joshua Wong detained at Bangkok airport

Student activist Joshua Wong was being held in Bangkok airport Wednesday morning after arriving from Hong Kong

Wong’s Demosisto party said in a Facebook post he was detained at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport early morning and was unreachable until after 4 a.m.

The statement said Wong arrived in the Thai capital from Hong Kong shortly before midnight on Tuesday, RTHK reports.

Demosisto said that after Wong’s arrival at the airport, nobody was able to get in touch with him until hours later.

The party said a Thai student activist due to meet Wong at the airport asked to see him but was refused permission.

Wong is due to speak at an event in Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University on Thursday.

Demosisto called for his immediate release and asked Hong Kong immigration officials to ensure his safety.

It condemned the Thai government for “unreasonably limiting Wong’s freedom and right to entry”.
