A high school chemistry teacher has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of indecently assaulting three underage students and having sex with two of them.
High Court Justice Andrew Chan said the 31-year-old defendant abused the trust and respect of the students in order to satisfy his lust, Apple Daily reports.
A deterrent penalty was appropriate in the circumstances, he said.
John Reading, attorney for the defendant, argued that two of the students had sex with his client “out of their own will” and the third student was the defendant’s girlfriend at the time.
But Justice Chan ruled that the only factor he would consider for leniency was that the defendant pleaded guilty.
The judge said the defendant crossed the line on intimacy with his students and had a casual attitude toward sex.
The defendant started seeing student A, 14, in 2014 and the pair had sex in a guesthouse on Lamma Island from the first time and regularly thereafter at home, the court heard.
The man approached student B, 15, in July last year and fondled her in a cinema. He was pushed away.
In the same month, the defendant met student C, 15, and invited her to his home, where he molested her, according to court records.
Two months later, he asked C to “give him her virginity”. Student C insisted she never treated the defendant as her boyfriend.
The case came to light after student C told student B about what happened. The latter reported the incident to school authorities.
Lee Suet-ying, chairperson of the Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools, said she was heartbroken by the conviction, news website hk01.com reports.
Lee said one should not be a teacher if one cannot meet the required moral standards.
She said teachers should keep a healthy distance from students regardless of age and discourage any physical contact.
