Mobile app saves life of old hiker trapped in Sha Tin

A mobile app has helped save the life of a 73-year-old man after he fell off a slope in a hiking accident in Sha Tin.

The man, a retired accountant, lost contact with his family after he went out on a solo hike at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Sky Post reports.

Worried family members called the police at around 1 p.m., and his daughter remembered that she had activated the Find My iPhone function on his father’s smartphone.

The app enabled rescuers to pinpoint the old man’s location. Firemen found him lying on a hillside near Siu Lek Yuen, covered with dirt and mud and trembling, Apple Daily reports.

A quick checkup by medical personnel showed that the man only suffered minor scratches.

He was sent to hospital with tin foil wrapped around his body to keep him warm.

iPhone’s Find My iPhone and the Friend Locator App on the Android platform allow users to automatically send out signals that establish their location through the Global Positioning System technology.
