Squash from YATA Tai Po supermarket yields jumping maggots

Eat vegetables and fruits, they’re good for your health. Well, one can’t be so sure even about that these days.

A video clip of jumping maggots coming out of slices of squash allegedly bought at a popular supermarket is making the rounds of social media.

A netizen calling herself June Leung said she bought the squash from the supermarket of YATA department store in Tai Po.

She said when she cut it open, she saw tiny maggots come out of the fruit, Headline Daily reports.

In a video clip she uploaded onto a Facebook account named Tai Po, one can see at least three larvae of some unknown species wriggling on the chopping board after the squash was cut in half.

The maggots were of the jumping kind, which made them amusing to watch if they were not found inside what was meant to be part of some people’s dinner.

Netizens who saw the footage said it was scary and nauseating, while one joked that the jumping maggots could compete in the Olympics for larvae.

Responding to enquiries, a spokesperson for the supermarket said the squash in question was part of a shipment from South Korea, adding that several customers had complained about the presence of maggots in the squash they bought from the store on Monday.

The spokesperson said the staff have always been thorough in their inspection of samples of products sold at the supermarket.

Squash and similar products coming from the same source have been removed from the shelves, the spokesperson said.
