Customs agents arrested three people, including a police officer, and seized illicit cigarettes worth around HK$1.3 million in operations in Yuen Long and Sham Shui Po, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
A 59-year-old woman was arrested in Yuen Long on Monday after customs officers found 1,800 sticks of duty-not-paid cigarettes in her bicycle basket, Ming Pao Daily reports.
A follow-up raid on a stone hut the woman was employed to manage yielded another 190,000 illicit cigarettes.
After further investigation, customs officers arrested a 53-year-old man surnamed Lam in Sham Shui Po and found 4,200 illicit cigarettes in his backpack and another 300,000 sticks in his apartment.
They arrested Lam and his 43-year-old wife.
Police later confirmed that Lam is a police officer in the Wong Tai Sin Police Uniform Patrol Team. He is now suspended from his police duties.
Lam, who has been in the police service for 32 years, had returned to the force after early retirement.
He had wanted to collect his pension after serving another year in the force.
The three are out on bail, awaiting further investigation.
