Police launch manhunt after boy, 5, slashed in back of neck

Police are looking for a juvenile suspect following a violent attack on a 5-year-old boy in Tin Shui Wai.

Authorities launched a manhunt after receiving information that a kindergarten student was slashed in the back of his neck with a sharp object at about 4 pm Thursday.

The attack took place as the boy, whose family lives in a house along Tin Kwai Road, was heading to a park with his 62-year-old grandmother after school, Apple Daily reports.

As they were on a sidewalk across the Tin Sau Stop of MTR Light Rail, the grandmother, who was ahead of the boy, suddenly heard him cry.

When she looked at the grandson, she was horrified as she saw a slash in the back of his neck and blood seeping from the wound.

The elderly woman immediately called for help and some passers-by notified the police.

A witness told the police that he saw a chubby young man, who was about 1.6 meters to 1.7 meters tall, approach the boy and use some kind of sharp weapon to slash him on the nape of the neck.

Fortunately, the cut was not too deep and the boy is in no danger despite a one-inch-long wound.

Paramedics arrived on the spot and took him to a hospital where he is now in a stable condition.

Based on the information provided by witnesses, police are looking for a person aged between 14 and 18.

The juvenile suspect was wearing a black-colored windbreaker and dark trousers that looked like uniform of some school, according to the report.

He is said to have fled in the direction of Tin Yat Estate, which is close to Tin Sau Road Park, after the attack.

Some people tried to catch him by giving chase, but didn’t succeed as the suspect disappeared in the vicinity of Tin Shui Wai North Public Library.

Police inspectors went to the scene at about 7 pm and collected footage of multiple security cameras in the neighborhood for further investigations.

The case was listed as assault causing bodily harm. The attacker’s motive remained unclear.

Authorities have urged citizens who saw the incident or have any possible leads on the attacker to contact the criminal investigation team of Yuen Long Police District.

Meanwhile, parents have been reminded to keep a close watch on their kids at all times to prevent untoward incidents involving strangers.
