Police are looking for two of three men suspected of robbing and kidnapping a couple from their luxury house in Sai Kung.
The victims were rescued unhurt and one suspect was arrested, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
Police said three masked men with knives entered the second floor of the upscale Bella Vista in Silver Terrace Road at about 8 p.m. on Saturday.
They trussed up the owner, 67-year-old veteran architect Ma Kim-see, his wife and a 51-year-old Filipino helper.
The suspects made off with about HK$150,000 (US$19,320) in cash and jewelry.
Before fleeing, they locked up the maid in the toilet, then forced the couple to drive their Audi out to get more money from an ATM.
The maid managed to free herself and called the police.
Ma’s wife was rescued in the car in Ying Yip Road where a suspect was arrested with an additional HK$20,000 in cash.
Ma was later found in A Kung Wan Road hours later.
Investigators said the robbers held Ma in an underbrush by the roadside while one of them accompanied his wife to East Point City in Tseung Kwan O to buy jewelry worth HK$260,000 by credit card and withdraw HK$20,000 from an ATM.
The arrested suspect, a 27-year-old man from Guizhou province, told police they entered Hong Kong illegally by swimming from Shenzhen last Thursday, intending to commit robberies, according to Ming Pao Daily.
The Kwun Tong Police District crime unit, which is handling the case, described his accomplices as chubby, of medium height and in their thirties.
Police suspect there might be a group behind the case since the gang’s tactics were similar to those when Bossini heiress Queenie Law was kidnapped from her home in Clear Water Bay last April. Most of the kidnappers who were later arrested were also from Guizhou.
A Sai Kung district councilor said the fact that Bella Vista, which has 40 standalone luxury mansions, is situated near the sea makes it a perfect target for bandits.
