Mayor, party chief wounded in Sichuan shooting rampage

A city official opened fire at a meeting hall in Panzhihua city in Sichuan province, wounding the mayor and the party chief before turning the gun on himself.

Police are investigating the motive for the attacks, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

The shooting rampage, which took place Wednesday morning, might have been related to corruption and a political power struggle, investigators said.

The incident occurred at a convention and exhibition center where Panzhihua mayor Li Jianqin and party chief Zhang Yan were attending a meeting.

The suspect barged in and fired multiple rounds at Li and Zhang before fleeing the scene.

Li and Zhang were both wounded and were rushed to hospital where they are in stable condition.

Police later found the shooter dead in the building, apparently after shooting himself.

He was later identified as Chen Zhongshu, the city’s land and resources bureau chief.

Chen had not been invited to the meeting.

Mainland media reported that Chen had complained to friends about being oppressed and targeted by his superiors.

He had been investigated by the city’s disciplinary inspection department.

Panzhihua is rich in mineral resources which have often been a source of conflict among corrupt officials, reports said.
