An Indonesian domestic helper who was accused of stealing valuables from actress and Cantopop singer Cecilia Cheung has been sentenced to 18 months in jail.
Rospeni, 30, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft in District Court on Wednesday, news website hk01.com reports.
The court heard that the maid had worked in Cheung’s flat in Century Tower in Central since March 2014 until her contract ended on June 28 last year.
A lawsuit was filed against the maid after Cheung’s assistant found some of her valuables in Rospeni’s luggage. Rospeni was leaving that day.
She admitted to have stolen three branded handbags, three pairs of shoes, four bangles, two necklaces, a bracelet, a pair of earrings and two rings in February and March last year “out of greed”.
The valuables were worth a combined HK$560,000 (US$72,200).
The maid said Cheung was rarely at home and she could not resist the temptation to steal, with the valuables lying around the house.
Asking the court for leniency, the defense lawyer said Rospeni committed the crime because she was in financial distress resulting from poverty. She was carrying the burden of a HK$30,000 loan to pay for her brother’s medical costs in Indonesia, he said.
But the judge called her offense “serious”, saying she violated her employer’s trust, according to Apple Daily.
