Call of nature: Woman relieves herself on bus

A woman defecated on a bus after being refused permission to get off.

The woman had approached the bus driver asking to be allowed to alight.

When the driver refused for safety reasons, she proceeded to relieve herself outside the driver’s compartment, news website hk01.com reports, citing New World First Bus (NWFB).

NWFB confirmed the incident on Tuesday. It happened on the No. 8P bus traveling from Siu Sai Wan to Wan Chai on Sunday. The woman got off in Shau Kei Wan.

Photos taken by passengers and uploaded on social media show a middle-aged woman kneeling outside the driver’s box with her trousers lowered to her thighs.

She cleaned herself up with tissue which she left on the floor. Cleaning staff were called in to handle the mess when the bus arrived in the terminal.

A spokesman said the company takes such incidents seriously and will consider calling the police if any passenger breaches regulations.

Lawmaker Shiu Ka-chun, a social worker and a lecturer at the Hong Kong Baptist University, lamented the way the situation was handled.

He said it has become the norm to capture accidents or embarrassing public incidents on camera.

While no one was willing to stop the woman, almost everyone took out their smartphones to record the incident, he said.

Shiu said there was little understanding and sympathy for the woman as the passengers wanted to punish her for her behavior.

While cameras can help ensure justice is served, it can also create injustice, he said.
