Two young children, a boy aged 5 and his three-year-old sister, died in a tragic accident inside a shopping mall in the Chinese city of Tianjin on Monday.
According to mainland media, the kids fell from a height in a mall and crashed to the ground after their dad, who was carrying them in his arms, lost grip while standing near a fourth floor balcony.
In the terrible incident which took place late in the evening, the father was said to have initially lost grip on one child.
As he attempted to grab the kid who was slipping away, he lost control of the other child also, resulting in both the children plunging to their deaths from the fourth floor.
According to China News Service, the accident happened at the Joy City mall in Tianjin’s Nankai district at around 9 pm.
The father had been holding the children while looking over a glass barrier outside a restaurant on the fourth floor.
An eyewitness was quoted as saying that the dad was trying to get the children to look at their mother when one of the kids slipped over the barrier.
As the dad tried to seize the child, he lost grip on the second kid who was in his other arm, leading to the horrific double tragedy.
According to police, both the children were pronounced dead immediately.
Shopping mall staff cordoned off sections of the facility as authorities conducted an investigation.
A video clip being circulated on social media shows the parents crying hysterically over their children’s bodies after the tragic incident.
Several netizens, meanwhile, criticized the parents, accusing them of being reckless and careless in handling their children.
Some commentators also pointed fingers at the mall, blaming it for not doing enough to ensure the safety of its facilities.
The Joy City Mall, on its part, responded that it has complied with all the safety regulations. It pointed out that the glass fence was 1.3 meters in height, which is normally deemed adequate.
