Man, 80, dies after trying to save drowning wife

An 80-year-old man died after trying to save his wife who fell off their motorized sampan.

The man, surnamed Cheung, had jumped off the boat to try to save his drowning wife after she slipped and fell into the water while casting a net, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

Cheung, a retired employee of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, had been fishing with his 73-year-old wife off Tai O, a small fishing village on Lantau Island.

A passing fisherman saw the struggling couple and pulled them up to his boat and returned to shore.

Both were rushed to Tai O Clinic where the husband was pronounced dead.

The wife, who was conscious, was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital but her condition is not known, Sing Tao Daily reports.

According to their daughter, the couple had been going fishing three or four times a month as a hobby.

They sometimes sold their catch for extra income. She said her father was a good swimmer.
