Two passengers burned to death in Fanling high-speed crash

Two people are dead and another seriously injured after a Lexus car crashed and caught fire in Fanling.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the driver of the Lexus GS300 lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a traffic island.

Fire broke out after impact, trapping two passengers inside. The driver, surnamed Fok, 40, was rescued.

It took firemen several minutes to put out the fire but the two passengers, surnamed Kwok, 37 and Chan, 30, were already dead.

A third passenger had alighted before the accident.

Police said Fok had been driving at high speed when he lost control of the car in Jockey Club Road.

The crash sent the tires and debris flying in all directions while the car burned, witnesses said. 

Fok, who owns a telecom services company, was brought North District Hospital and remained conscious, according to news website hk01.com.

Police said there was nothing suspicious about the accident. Investigations are continuing.
