A 48-year-old man thought it was easier for him to rob a store by disguising himself as a woman, but it turned out not the case.
Police said the suspect, surnamed Lee, walked into a boutique on Aberdeen Street in Central at about 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, dressing himself in high-class female attire with a wig and a pair of high heels, Sing Tao Daily reports.
Seeing what looked like a rich lady entering the shop, a female employee showed “her” some dresses and walked with “her” to the fitting room so “she” could try them on.
As soon as they entered the cubicle, the man pulled out a knife on the employee and demanded money.
But instead of yielding to the man’s demand, the staffer started to scream for help, catching the attention of four men who happened to pass by the boutique.
They rushed into the store and grappled with the “lady” for the knife, only to see “her” ditch the wig and high heels and flee.
A fight ensued on the street after they caught up with the robber, but they failed to hold him down.
The store reported the attempted robbery to the police, which immediately launched a manhunt and arrested him about half an hour later on Tai Ping Shan Street in Sheung Wan, Apple Daily reported.
The employee was sent to hospital for cuts on her fingers.
Central Police District investigators said the female get-up was apparently intended as a disguise, but it is also possible that the man is a transvestite.
