Man crushed to death by high-speed train in Nanjing

A man crossing a railroad track was crushed to death by a high-speed train at the Nanjing South Railway Station on Sunday afternoon.

A video clip that went viral online shows the man, who appeared to be in his 30s or 40s, stuck between a high-speed train and the edge of the train station platform at 3:34 p.m., news website hk01.com reports.

Other video clips show people beside the man, apparently waiting for a rescue team while maintaining order at the station.

The victim was finally pulled out at about 5:20 p.m. after firemen used jackhammers and other equipment to crush part of the platform in order to free him.

According to a post on the station’s Weibo page, the incident took place when a D3026 high-speed train coming from the Shanghai Hongqiao Station and bound for Hankou in central China’s Hubei province, was arriving at the Nanjing station, Tencent News reported.

Just as the train was coming to a stop at Platform No. 21, a man, whose age and name were not disclosed, suddenly jumped off Platform No. 22 and cross the rail tracks in a bid to reach Platform No. 21.

His attempt apparently failed and he was caught in the narrow gap between the train and the platform.

He was pronounced dead by a doctor at the scene, according to the post.

Police are still investigating the incident.
