Singapore couple jailed for starving Filipina domestic helper

A Singapore court on Monday handed jail sentences to a local couple who pleaded guilty to starving their domestic worker from the Philippines.

Finance trader Lim Choon Hong was jailed for three weeks and fined S$10,000 (US$7,175), while his wife Chong Sui Foon was jailed for three months, BBC reports.

The sentences came after the Singaporean couple was found guilty of failing to provide their Filipina maid, a person named Thelma Oyasan Gawidan, with enough food.

In a case that has shocked the city-state, Gawidana was found to have lost 20 kgs — about 40 percent of her body weight — while she worked for Lim and Chong over a period of 15 months.

The maid testified in court that she was fed only small amounts of food twice a day, and her requests for more food were denied.

She was also made to sleep in a storeroom, and allowed to shower only once or twice a week.

Gawidan said she was unable to seek help earlier as her employers had confiscated her mobile phone and passport.

She finally fled in April 2014 and sought help from a migrant workers aid group.
