A man and a woman were arrested at a Japanese barbecue restaurant in Mong Kok on Sunday night after the two fought when the woman refused to pay for her share of the bill, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
The 37-year-old man surnamed Yung, and the 38-year-old woman surnamed Wong, were new acquaintances who met for the first time on Friday after Yung had asked her to help sell an old video game console, according to Apple Daily.
Yung has been selling old video games and consoles for more than 30 years at his store in Sino Center in Mong Kok.
When the duo checked the bill at the Yakiniku restaurant in King Wa Centre, they found that they had incurred HK$2,200.
The two got into an argument after Yung suggested that they split the bill.
Wong refused to pay for her half and the quarrel soon turned into a physical fight, resulting in the restaurant calling the police.
Yung was arrested for assault occasioning actual bodily harm while Wong was arrested for common assault. They were both released on bail.
According to reports, Yung sustained injuries to his nose while Wong had head and limb injuries. Both were taken to Kwong Wah Hospital for treatment.
Some netizens commented that the woman should have split the bill as they were only acquaintances and that men have no obligation to pay for women.
Simon Wong, managing director of Gyu-Kaku Hong Kong, operator of Yakiniku restaurant, updated the incident on social media on Tuesday morning, saying the woman did try to pay back Yung for the meal after learning the price.
She handed Yung a HK$500 bill but he refused and tore it up, Wong said.
