Filipino maid gets one-year jail term for abandoning baby’s body

A 35-year-old Filipino domestic helper was sentenced to one year in jail after she admitted to one charge of preventing the lawful burial of a body.

Grado Aileen Ongcoy abandoned the infant’s body after the boy died shortly after birth in her employer’s Sham Tseng apartment in 2015, Sing Tao Daily reports.

Her efforts to resuscitate the infant were unsuccessful.

Ongcoy wrapped the body in clothes, plastic bags, toilet paper and diapers and threw it in a public toilet, the court heard. The body was found two weeks later on April 4.

The coroner’s report showed that the boy had no signs of asphyxiation or injuries and the judge accepted Ongcoy’s statement that he had died of natural causes.

Ongcoy’s attorney pleaded for leniency, saying she has an eight-year-old daughter in the Philippines and she has lost contact with the girl’s father.

The lawyer said Ongcoy turned herself in to the Philippine consulate after the body was found and was very cooperative with police investigators.

The prosecution agreed that the fact Ongcoy turned herself in facilitated the investigation.

It said the quality of the CCTV footage showing the abandonment of the baby’s body was insufficient to render the clip as evidence.

As Ongcoy has now been in custody for over a year, she will be deported shortly to the Philippines, Apple Daily reports.

Ongcoy first came to Hong Kong to work in 2012 and became pregnant after starting a relationship.
