A construction worker who punished his eight-year-old son for underperforming at school by making him cross a busy road on his knees was placed on 12 months’ probation on Monday, Apple Daily reports.
The man, surnamed Lee, forced his son to cross the road on his knees on Jan. 23 in Lam Tin. The incident was caught on video by a passer-by.
Lee made the boy pull his ears and crawl on his knees as they crossed the road together after learning of his poor results in school, according to Headline Daily.
A medical examination found that the boy suffered from soreness on both knees. Police arrested Lee on the grounds of child abuse.
Lee admitted to one count of child abuse in a Kwun Tong magistrate’s court.
The judge accepted that Lee is a responsible and loving father who merely used the wrong methods to educate his son. He put him on probation for 12 months.
A psychologist appointed by the court concluded that the father did not suffer from any major psychological problems.
Lee’s attorney had pleaded that Lee fully regretted his actions and understood now that he should not have been so impulsive, and promised not to make the same mistake again.
Lee is the sole breadwinner of the family and has to take care of his mother, his wife and three children aged between one and nine.
Lee said he has made plans to attend parenting classes.
