A goods-vehicle driver has won the praise of netizens with his heartwarming acts of kindness toward an old man in the early hours of Monday in Tsuen Wan.
The driver, surnamed Wong, was plying his vehicle on Tsuen Wan Road at around 3:30am when he spotted an elderly man walking slowly along the side of the slow lane.
Fearing that the senior citizen was at the risk of getting hit by passing vehicles, Wong switched on his truck’s hazard flasher and moved his vehicle behind the pedestrian.
He kept following the old man closely, guarding the man’s back with his truck to ensure his safety from the traffic on the road.
After a few minutes, Wong got off the lorry and approached the old man to inquire why he was walking on the road at such an unearthly hour, news website hk01.com reports.
He then learnt that the elderly citizen had hired a taxi to go his apartment at Lei Muk Shue Estate, but the taxi driver ditched him midway.
The cabbie made the 80-year-old passenger get off at Texaco Road, falsely telling the customer that he had reached his destination.
It was only after he got off the taxi and the vehicle sped away that the old man realized that he was nowhere near Lei Muk Shue Estate.
As the senior citizen didn’t have money for another cab ride, he had no alternative but to walk in the direction of his home.
After Wong heard the story, he offered to take the old man home on his truck, having realized that it would take the elderly man about two hours to reach his apartment if he were to travel by foot.
He helped the elderly gentleman get into the lorry and took him to his residential complex in New Territories West.
After reaching the housing estate, Wong escorted the senior citizen to the lobby of his building to make sure that he was safe home.
The public got to know of the matter after Wong recounted the incident in a social media post.
The truck driver said he wanted to share the story as he felt it will serve as a reminder to people to be extra careful driving, particularly at night, as there could be bikers and old people on highways.
Wong’s post has attracted over a thousand “likes”, with netizens heaping praise on him for his kindness toward a stranger.
Meanwhile, several commentators lashed out at the taxi driver who had left the old man halfway from home, describing him as “cold-blooded”.
