Woman, 43, arrested at airport for smuggling cocaine

A 43-year-old foreign woman was arrested at the Hong Kong International Airport last Friday after she tried to smuggle cocaine worth around HK$690,000 into the city.

According to RTHK, officers from the Narcotics Bureau, along with personnel from the Customs and Excise Department, intercepted a female visitor at around 2pm on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Suspecting that the visitor may have hidden drugs inside her body, investigators took her to a hospital for a physical examination.

A check revealed that the woman was carrying 72 wraps of cocaine inside her system after apparently ingesting the sachets earlier.

She was made to excrete the wraps, which together contained 854 grams of cocaine.

The woman has been placed under detention and is facing drug trafficking charges.

According to the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, a drug trafficker, if convicted, can face life imprisonment and a fine of up to HK$5 million.

The report did not provide the nationality of the woman or her background.
