Shark in Deep Water Bay? Online photo sparks discussion

An online photo showing a man’s foot severely bitten by an unknown sea creature has sparked intense discussion about sharks in Hong Kong waters

The photo, which was posted on Sunday to a Facebook page dedicated to hiking enthusiasts by a person named Dennis Fok, shows a four-inch-long wound and blood on the foot of the man.

According to Fok, the man in the photo is his friend and the large wound was inflicted by an unknown animal, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

Fok and his friend went to Deep Water Bay on the southern part of Hong Kong Island on Sunday.

As they were chatting in the water, the friend suddenly shouted that he had been bitten. Blood soon started to come to the surface.

Lifeguards who heard their cry for help rushed to rescue them. The injured man was sent to hospital.

Fok said an object that looked like a tooth belonging to some species of fish was found in the wound. It is undergoing lab tests.

A doctor performed an operation after noting that the man’s artery, nerves and ligaments had been damaged by the bite.

Netizens who saw the photo had different opinions on what kind of creature bit him.

While some suspected it was likely a shark, others said it could have been an aggressive “sea wolf” or a giant moray eel, according to Headline Daily.
