A local taxi driver who was filmed scolding and swearing at a foreigner in English has found instant fame on social media.
According to the video description, the taxi driver took a sudden turn from Tai Yau Street to Sam Chuk Street in San Po Kong while a foreign man was crossing the road.
The man was shocked and hit the taxi. The driver got off the car and the two began quarreling on the street.
“You walking? But this is the road. It’s not [for] pedestrians,” the driver said. “You punched my car. You [are] illegal. This is not right. This is Hong Kong.”
The foreigner tried to comfort the driver by saying “Hey, relax”, but the angry cab driver kept shouting and pointed his finger at the man.
“I don’t care!” The driver said. “This is criminal!”
The driver mentioned a few swear words in English and told the foreigner to “go back [to] your country” before he went back to his cab.
The video had been viewed more than 190,000 times on Facebook by Monday morning. Nearly 1,200 netizens shared it online, many of them astonished at the taxi driver’s English proficiency.
A netizen commented on the video by posting the government slogan “Better English. Better prospects. Let’s Learn English”. It has attracted 129 reactions from other Facebook users.
“Hong Kong people are too educated,” another netizen wrote in a public post. “They expected he would say some ching chang chong and do some [kung] fu but he speaks his language.”
