Police arrested a 28-year-old car driver and his 18-year-old female passenger in Sha Tin after a 14-kilometer car chase that resulted in three other vehicles being hit, hk01.com reports.
A traffic police officer flagged down the driver surnamed Ho after he was spotted using his mobile phone while driving a Mercedes Benz car on Tsing Kwai Highway at around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. But instead of stopping, Ho sped away.
The officer called for backup, and 13 police cars eventually joined in the car chase that stretched around 14 km from Kwai Chung to Sha Tin, Headline Daily reported.
Ho attempted to break out of the vehicles ahead of his car but failed, colliding with three of them in the process.
When Ho finally stopped, police officers with batons in hand surrounded his car and arrested him and his companion surnamed Tse, who was at the back seat.
Ho was tackled to the floor by several policemen and handcuffed.
Sources said investigation showed that Ho was driving a stolen car with fake registration.
Ho is likely to face several charges, including theft of a vehicle, use of forged documents and dangerous driving, while Tse was found to be in possession of another person’s identity document.
The police also found a canister for consuming drugs inside the car.
A witness surnamed Lam said he was driving a seven-seater with his wife and 11-year-old daughter aboard when he saw Ho’s car speeding on Lion Rock Tunnel Road and several police cars chasing it.
He said he knew something was wrong, but still he was unable to avoid Ho’s car which hit his vehicle on the right side.
Lam later found that Ho was driving without a valid license and his car did not have any insurance coverage, which meant that Lam might not get compensated for the damage to his vehicle.
