President Xi’s three-day visit to Hong Kong ‘confirmed’

President Xi Jinping will have a fully-packed itinerary when he visits Hong Kong for the first time since assuming the presidency in 2013 to mark the 20th anniversary of the city’s return to China.

Sources have confirmed the three-day visit, public broadcaster RTHK reports.

Xi will arrive with his wife Peng Liyuan on June 29 and stay until July 1 for the inauguration of Hong Kong’s next leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.

He will visit the People’s Liberation Army garrison as well as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge or the high-speed rail link terminus, local reports said.

Because of the tight schedule, he may not be able to pay a visit to a local family, which former President Hu Jintao and former Premier Wen Jiabao did during their visits to the territory, the reports said.

Peng Liyuan may visit some families and community centers.

The president and his wife will land at the Hong Kong International Airport next Thursday and head straight to the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Wan Chai, where they will be staying.

On the first day of his visit, he will meet with Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, incoming Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other top officials, RTHK said.

On the second day, he will go to Beijing’s liaison office in Western and attend a banquet to meet representatives of various sectors.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new administration will be held on July 1.

Before leaving the city, Xi will visit the construction site of one of the two ongoing infrastructure projects, the cross-border bridge or the rail link.

More than a third of the 29,000-strong police force will be deployed around the clock for Xi’s visit.
