A man is being investigated by police over possible theft after he returned an expensive Rolex watch owned by his friend and claimed he had taken it by mistake.
The 21-year-old owner of the Cosmograph Daytona watch, surnamed Chung, reported to the police at about 11 p.m. on Sunday, saying he could not find his watch after he played soccer with friends at Fat Tseung Street West Playground in Cheung Sha Wan earlier that night. He suspected it was stolen.
Chung said he had bought the Swiss luxury watch in Japan for about HK$425,000. On Sunday, he announced in a chat group with his soccer pals that he would withdraw his report to the police if the guy who had taken it for whatever reason returned it to him, Apple Daily reported.
Soon after, one of his friends sent Chung a text message, saying he had taken the watch by mistake.
Chung’s pal said he had returned the watch to the Cheung Sha Wan police station.
Chung called the station for confirmation before he went there and got the watch back.
He said he had no intention of pressing charges against his soccer friend.
But since theft is an indictable crime, police decided to list the man who returned the watch as a suspect and proceed with the investigation.
