HK woman killed, husband injured in Taiwan freeway crash

A Hong Kong woman was killed and her husband injured in a car crash on Taiwan’s Sun Yat-sen Freeway.

The tragedy took place at about 10 a.m. on Monday, when the couple were aboard a taxi heading for Taipei after arriving at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

The woman was killed on the spot while the husband suffered head injuries.

Investigators said the accident was preceded by a collision between two lorries.

One of the lorries swerved to the side on impact and hit a container truck, whose driver lost control and ended up crashing into the roadside barriers.

The taxi, which was coming right behind the truck, failed to brake in time and ploughed into the vehicle.

Two of the four drivers involved were injured.

Local media reports said the woman was unconscious, presumed dead, when she was rushed to hospital. Her husband suffered intercranial hemorrhage.

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department said the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan was following up on the case and offering all necessary assistance.

The couple, both 36, were in Taipei to seek medical treatment, according to Apple Daily.

They were scheduled to fly back to Hong Kong later that day.
