Fifteen injured in stampede on Shenzhen subway train

A stampede on a subway train in Shenzhen during the morning rush hour on Thursday left 15 commuters injured, according to mainland media.

In a bizarre incident, panic erupted shortly after 8.25am as people saw a passenger make a wild dash through a subway carriage.

No one knew why the man was running, but as often happens in such cases, other people on the train too took to their feet as they suspected that he might be fleeing some danger.

This led to a stampede, with people falling over each other as they tried to get away as quickly as possible from the area.

According to Shenzhen Metro, the incident took place on a Line 7 train as it was passing through Huanggangcun Station.

A total of 15 passengers suffered injuries following the chaos on the train. Of them, nine were transported to a hospital while six left the scene on their own.

Video footage posted online by one of the commuters showed mobile phones, handbags, umbrellas and breakfast items scattered around in a train carriage, and a male passenger with blood pouring down his face.

Authorities announced later that initial police investigation suggested that a passenger fainted and fell onto a man, who in turn panicked and began running and prompting others to follow suit.

According to a local media outlet, a passenger described the scene on the train as being totally chaotic, with no one knowing exactly why there was panic.

“Some people were shouting ‘fire’, while some were saying that there is a person with a knife,” the passenger was quoted as saying.

The eyewitness said he saw passengers rush forward through a carriage while some others were pinned to the floor after getting knocked down.
